What the Interpret My Labs does

This page hosts a free tool that turns raw women's hormone lab numbers into plain-language descriptions. You type in the values your blood test reported — FSH, estradiol, AMH, TSH, free T4, total testosterone — along with your age and where you are in your cycle, and it tells you whether each value reads as normal, low, high, or borderline, plus a short sentence on what that pattern often points to.

It is built for the gap between getting a lab report and getting a chance to talk it through with a prescriber. If your results say '12.8 mIU/mL' next to a reference range and you have no idea what that means for perimenopause, ovarian reserve, or thyroid, this tool gives you a first-pass reading in words instead of numbers so you walk into that conversation already knowing which questions to ask.

The tool checks each value against a fixed set of cutoffs written into the page. It is a rule-based lookup, not a machine-learning model, not a diagnostic algorithm, and it is not trained on any patient dataset. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved — the interpretation runs entirely in your browser.

How to read your result

Each result carries one of four labels. 'Normal' means the value fell inside the range the tool treats as expected for your entered context. 'Low' and 'High' mean it fell below or above that range. 'Borderline' flags a value sitting in a gray zone — for example a TSH between 4.0 and 10 mIU/L, which the tool describes as a subclinical hypothyroid pattern to confirm with free T4 and symptoms. The one-line meaning attached to each label is the useful part: it names what that pattern commonly suggests and, in several cases, what to pair it with (repeat testing, estradiol, AMH, SHBG, an ultrasound).

Context changes the reading, so fill in age and cycle phase before trusting the output. The same FSH number is interpreted differently depending on whether you mark 'menopausal' (12+ months without a period) or 'follicular' (cycle days 1-12). An FSH above 30 in someone under 40 triggers a note about premature ovarian insufficiency and a repeat test; in a menopausal context that same value is not flagged that way — the menopausal reading only calls FSH normal once it reaches 50, so a mid-range number there lands as borderline rather than as a red flag. If you leave phase as 'unknown', the tool applies its general cutoffs rather than phase-specific ones.

Treat every result as a prompt for a conversation, not an answer. The tool says so itself on-screen: interpretation depends on the lab's method, your individual factors, and clinical context it cannot see. Take the labels and the pairing suggestions to your clinician — use them to decide what to ask about and what to retest, not to self-diagnose or to start, stop, or change any treatment.

What the result is based on

Every reading comes from fixed numeric cutoffs hardcoded in the tool. Some examples the tool actually uses: FSH is called high above 12.5 in the follicular phase, or above 30 with age under 40 (POI note), or above 25 otherwise; estradiol under 30 pg/mL reads low in reproductive years and over 400 reads high; AMH over 6.0 ng/mL flags a PCOS-or-high-reserve note while under 0.3 reads very low; TSH is normal up to 4.0, borderline from 4.0 to 10, and high above 10 mIU/L; total testosterone over 100 ng/dL is high (with an over-200 tumor-workup mention) and over 70 is borderline. These are the tool's own thresholds, not universal medical reference ranges.

The inputs are exactly six lab fields plus age and cycle phase, with units the tool expects: FSH in mIU/mL, estradiol in pg/mL, AMH in ng/mL, TSH in mIU/L, free T4 in ng/dL, testosterone in ng/dL. You can enter as few as one value; blank fields are skipped. The tool does no conversion, so a result reported in different units will be misread.

There is no data source, model, or external service behind the output. The logic is a series of if/else rules that run in your browser as you type. It does not diagnose, does not calculate a risk score, and does not retain your entries.

What it cannot tell you

  • Unit-blind: it assumes exactly the units labeled on each field (for example estradiol in pg/mL, testosterone in ng/dL). Many labs report in different units — enter those and the interpretation will be wrong, because the tool never converts.
  • It uses one set of cutoffs for everyone; it does not use the specific reference range printed on your own lab report, which varies by assay and laboratory. A value the tool calls 'high' may sit inside your lab's stated normal range, or vice versa.
  • The 'luteal' cycle-phase option exists in the dropdown but the FSH and estradiol logic has no luteal-specific rules — those two fall back to general reproductive cutoffs, so a luteal reading is not phase-adjusted the way a follicular one is.
  • It reads each hormone in near-isolation and only occasionally cross-references others; it does not weigh full clinical context — medications, HRT or hormonal birth control, pregnancy, recent illness, time of day of the draw, or symptoms — all of which change how a real result should be read.
  • It flags patterns but confirms nothing: notes like 'PCOS suspect', 'POI suspect', or 'perimenopause' are prompts to test further, not diagnoses. Several results explicitly tell you to repeat the test or pair it with another marker.
  • Its testosterone 'low' flag is suppressed when you mark yourself menopausal, and free testosterone — which the tool itself suggests considering — is not an input at all, so androgen questions are only partly covered.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool diagnose menopause, PCOS, or a thyroid condition?

No. It labels each value normal, low, high, or borderline and describes what the pattern commonly suggests — for instance an FSH over 25 as 'consistent with perimenopause/menopause'. Those are educational prompts, not diagnoses. Only a clinician can diagnose, using your full history and your lab's own reference ranges.

Which units do I enter?

Use the units printed on each field: FSH in mIU/mL, estradiol in pg/mL, AMH in ng/mL, TSH in mIU/L, free T4 in ng/dL, and total testosterone in ng/dL. The tool does not convert units, so if your report uses different ones the reading will be off.

Why does my FSH read differently when I change the cycle phase?

Because the tool applies different cutoffs by context. In the follicular phase it calls FSH high above 12.5; in a menopausal context it only calls FSH normal once it reaches 50, so lower values there read low or borderline; and an FSH over 30 in someone under 40 triggers a premature-ovarian-insufficiency note with a repeat-test suggestion. Setting age and phase accurately matters.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?

No. The interpretation runs entirely in your browser as you type. Nothing you enter is transmitted to a server or stored.

Do I have to enter every lab value?

No. Enter as few as one. Blank fields are skipped, and you only get interpretations for the values you provide. Providing age and cycle phase sharpens the reading for FSH, estradiol, AMH, and testosterone.

It said my value is 'borderline' — what should I do?

Borderline means it sits in a gray zone the tool won't call clearly normal or abnormal, such as a TSH between 4.0 and 10 mIU/L. Take it, and any pairing suggestion the tool gives, to your clinician to decide whether to repeat the test or check a related marker. Don't change any treatment on the basis of this label.
