Progesterone

A hormone released after ovulation that prepares and protects the uterine lining.

Progesterone is produced by the ovary after ovulation. It balances the effect of estrogen on the endometrium (uterine lining) and supports early pregnancy.

In menopausal hormone therapy for a woman who still has a uterus, a progestogen such as micronized progesterone is added to estrogen to protect the endometrium.
