Insulin resistance

A state in which cells respond poorly to insulin, so the body needs more to keep blood sugar normal.

Insulin resistance means the body’s cells do not respond well to insulin, prompting the pancreas to make more of it. Over time this can raise blood sugar and lead to prediabetes.

It is commonly associated with PCOS and is one reason metformin is sometimes used in that setting.
